I am happy to bring you a very special guest post today from Mel Battison, a dear friend of Pawsh who has now been rescuing and fostering dogs in need with Hopeful Hearts for one whole year! Today marks her first ‘rescue-versary’ so be sure to hop on over to her fantastic blog and wish her a happy anniversary! And keep reading for some insights into what this day means to Mel…
If someone had told me a year ago that I would be the crazy foster dog lady that I am today I would have laughed and said no way am I allowing random dogs to come into my home, pee on my shag rug, chew my shoes, and steal my real estate.
And yet here we are, one year later. We had to upgrade to a king-sized bed to accommodate all of the furballs, I am short a shoe or two (possibly three), my beloved shag rug had to be thrown out and we also became foster failures all because of an adorable schnauzer named Wookie. In other words, I’ve never been happier.
Pawsh Magazine posed a question to their fans on Facebook some time ago asking if anyone had considered fostering. I said it was life changing and I’ve found that material things no longer matter (especially when they’ve been peed on). I think anyone who fosters can attest to that. Last year my Christmas wish list included gift cards to Bouclair and Home Outfitters, but this year I’m hoping Santa brings us a carpet cleaner.
It’s not just my environment that has changed – it’s also me. Like the Grinch, my heart has grown three sizes since this journey began, as I continue to fall in love over and over again with each dog that walks into my life. And I have grown as a person. I’ve learned how to celebrate the small things like never before and brush off the bad things, because at the end of the day they’re really not all that significant anyway.
But the most important thing this year has taught me is that life is really about making sacrifices and helping others, especially those who don’t have a voice. So here’s to chewed shoes, falling in love, and many more Rescue-versaries!
