blue-dog-bedIs there anything more lovely than snuggling up in bed on a chilly winter’s day? We sniffed around and found these darling bedding options for pups and peeps! First up a charming royal blue Romeo & Juliet dog duvet offering sweet simplicity to any corner of the home. And for the peeps a romantic deep blue Crinkle Duvet — although we all know that the dog ends up on our bed most of the time anyway! Which would you splurge on?

TORONTO DOG MAGAZINE: BACK TO BASICS

toronto-pet-photographer-pawsh-studio-golden-1-webJust a quick note to say thank you to everyone for your patience while Pawsh took a little hiatus this winter. We needed to get away and recharge, destress and seek balance, spend some time detatched from the constant computer time and really just hug our dogs to help get us reinvigorated about the Pawsh project.

Happily we will be returning to regular scheduled programming next week. The past several weeks have been spent cooking up new fun, bite-sized features for the blog that you and your pupsters can enjoy on the go!

We are so looking forward to getting back into chit-chatting about dog wellness, behaviour, fantastic products and living a dog-friendly lifestyle on a regular basis. We have missed it deeply. Thank you everyone again and again for sticking with us while we worked to rediscover our own ‘pawsh’ voice amidst the general noise of life and the media world. We can’t wait for next week!

DOG WELLNESS: EASY ROUTINES TO ADD FUN TO YOUR DOG’S LIFE

stylish-dog-magazine-poodlesOver the years I have been lucky enough to interview a variety of dog trainers and behaviourists and a common thread of wisdom that I gleaned from these conversations is that dogs thrive on structure and routine. So recently, I created this little dog-friendly ritual…

At the end of the day when I’m getting ready for bed I take off my socks and toss one to each pup to catch, which they do oh-so gleefully! I know, I know, this sounds a little odd, but it is a fun, simple activity that has over time taught Rory and Lucy that the day is winding down.

They sit patiently and wait for their toss. Then they roll around on the rug for a moment and maybe play a quick game of chase before happily bounding away to their beds for a good night’s sleep (without the socks — I can’t have them chewing those!)

Don’t ask me how this little routine started, but it is a sweet way to wrap up an evening and something the dogs seem to look forward to. It is a final little play session for the day then off to bed for some sweet dreams!

What daily rituals do you have with your fur-kids? I would love to know!

TORONTO PET PHOTOGRAPHER: SOULMATE PET PHOTO SESSIONS

Toronto pet photographerOne of my goals this year is to give back more. So I am launching a year long project called Soulmate Sessions which will offer fine art pet photography sessions for pets with a terminal diagnosis absolutely FREE.

Soulmate Sessions are designed to celebrate an animal’s life and memory. The session can be for the animal only or for the animal and their family. All sessions will take place in Toronto, although there will be a few Ottawa dates available as I do travel there a few times of year. All that is needed to book a Soulmate Session is a formal letter of diagnosis from a registered vet.

Our pets are beyond precious. They are beyond incredible. They are the true definition of a best friend and these are the qualities that Soulmate Sessions will strive to capture.

DOG TRAINING TIPS: WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR DOG BARKS

Toronto-pet-photographer-dog-barking-tipsHave you ever been annoyed because your dog barks — and barks and barks and barks? It’s a question most pet parents would answer ‘yes’ to (including myself!) No matter how much we train a dog not to bark there will always be those occasions when they yip and yap away. However, I’ve discovered a new way to approach this matter…

Instead of scolding your furry friend when they bark at the mailman, the garbage truck or someone at the door, tell your dog “Thank you.” Actually say thank you out loud and then redirect your little minions to their bed for a cookie.

The reason is this; if you raise your voice at a dog who is barking, the dog picks up on that energy and interprets that extra sound as ‘Well everyone is on alert now! Yay!’ By saying thank you instead, you keep your energy calm and composed which translates better to redirecting a dog’s attention.

Remember a dog barks to raise awareness of what they perceive to be a danger to the group. So acknowledge their bark as a positive thing and literally thank them for their safety tip. I’ve been doing this lately with Rory and Lucy and it is proving to be a great training tactic!
