PET SAFETY: 5 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PET SAFE THIS HALLOWEEN

Pawsh-Halloween-pet-safety-1 Unlike spooky Halloween costumes, safety tips never go out of style. To help keep your furkid as safe and as happy as possible this Halloween — and to keep stress at a low for you — here are six important pet safety tips to keep in mind so that everyone can have the most fun possible!

1.  KEEP COSTUMES COMFORTABLE
Yes, your pupster might be the most adorable looking lobster in the neighbourhood ever, but if that costume is a little too tight or a little too warm it can be dangerous. Make sure that all costumes fit your dog comfortably with room to breathe — and watch out for little bits and pieces that might drop off and become choking hazards.

2.  NO CANDY
Most pet parents know that candy — especially chocolate — is dangerous for dogs. But hyper trick-or-treaters might forget. Little ones especially may try to include Fido in on the fun by offering him a bon-bon or two, so be sure to keep an eye out and keep all sugary substances out of your dog’s reach.

Tip: If your dog is accompanying your family on the trick-or-treating shenanigans, keep these 5 dog-friendly human foods in mind to treat canine companions.

Pawsh-Halloween-pet-safety-23.  BABY GATES
With the door opening and closing most of the night, it can be easy for your dog to slip out in the excitement. To prevent losing your furkid, consider putting up a baby gate in your home to separate your dog from the front door. This will make handing out candy easier and keep your pupster safe.

4.  DON’T FORCE THE FUN
You know how not everyone is a fan of haunted houses (confession: me!) Well, similarly, not all dogs are a fan of seeing their neighbourhood populated by zombies, goblins and ghosts. In fact, some costumes may be a bit too much for some dogs and can scare them terribly, so be mindful of your dog’s body language.

If their tail goes down between their legs, if they start trembling, if their ears lie flat or if they start to cry etc., the Halloween excitement is probably too much for them. Cater to your dog’s individual personality — if they don’t like Halloween, don’t force them to join in the fun. Pawsh-Halloween-pet-safety-35.  GLOW IN THE DARK
Reflective gear and glow-in-the-dark collars and leashes are all excellent ways to keep your dog safe if out and about at night. Not only will these items help you to keep track of where they are, but they will help passing motorists to see them too. Most glow-in-the-dark items are very reasonably priced and make all the difference when it comes to night time pet safety.

Keep these pet safety tips in mind so that you and your dog can have the best Halloween celebration of all time! May you all have a wonderful Halloween! xo

CHRISTMAS PET MINI SESSIONS

Bark-For-Life-Pawsh-Xmas-Promo-550Christmas is coming and while we usually don’t talk about anything Christmas related here on Pawsh until December 1st (we believe in trying to preserve the magic of the season by not talking about it the day after Halloween or even in November…), this year I am making a wee exception to bring you mini holiday pet photo sessions.

This photo event is to raise money for Bark For Life — a national initiative by The Canadian Cancer Society that celebrates the relationship cancer survivors and patients have with their four-legged friends; a way to recognize that dogs, in many ways, are caregivers during a cancer journey.

Did you know, according to veterinary texts, that approximately 4 million pets develop cancer each year in North America? And I’m sure all of you, like myself, care deeply about somebody who is battling with cancer. So we are trying to lend a paw this season!

Here is how the mini holiday pet sessions will work. There is a sitting fee of $25 for a 15 minute shoot (that doesn’t sound like a lot, but 15 minutes is all I need to get some truly chic photos of your furball). I will have a selection of chic, tasteful holiday props on hand to emphasize the holiday spirit.

You will then be given access to a private gallery with 3 proofs to choose from and your selection will become a fine art print. Additional prints are available for an additional fee, as are large format canvases and even holiday postcards if you wish!

The possibilities abound when you sign up for a mini pet session and this holiday themed opportunity is a great way to celebrate the season, do some good and receive an artistic photograph that will be treasured forever.

These photo sessions will be held in Toronto, Canada on November 16th, 2013. Space is limited and assigned on a first come, first serve basis.

To reserve your spot, please email [email protected] with “Holiday Mini Session” in the subject line or contact me through this form.

I can’t wait to meet you and your furkids and celebrate the upcoming festive season with you! Any questions, please feel free to pepper me with them via email or in the comments section below! xo

PAWSH WALLPAPER CONTEST

Pawsh-magazine-free-download-Sept-smallWe all need a work break from time to time and what better way to de-stress and refocus than by looking at an adorable, fluffy photo? Personally speaking it always makes me smile and instantly puts me in a better mood.

So inspired by the soothing nature of pets, Pawsh is launching a monthly wallpaper contest. Here’s how it will work:

Each month an open call will go out to professional pet photographers and pet-loving graphic designers alike for pet-inspired wallpaper submissions. I will pick my favourite and it will be available as a FREE wallpaper download to add a certain ‘awwww’ factor to our computer screens.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
1) Format photos and/or designs to 1600 x 1200 pixels wide at 72dpi.
2) Include a small, tasteful watermark in the bottom left hand corner of the image. Pawsh will also be including the month and our website in the bottom right hand corner of selected images.
3) To submit, simply post your photo on our Facebook page wall with the title “[MONTH] Wallpaper.” You can email it in as well to [email protected].
4) Submitted photographs and/or designs should somehow reflect the general theme that will be announced at the beginning of each month. For example, next month is October so we’ll be looking for something Halloween related. (Bonus points if it something completely original!)
5) The winner each month will receive a little written blurb published on the Pawsh blog in which they can share a bit about themselves, their passions and their inspirations, as well as three social media links of their choice.

Above is an example of how the FREE wallpaper download will work. Please feel free to download it for your desktop if you like it and keep an eye out for October’s wallpaper!
