A dog’s eyes are beautiful, but did you know that…
They have not one, not two but three eyelids! The third eyelid acts like a membrane and keeps the eye lubricated. The technical term for this piece of anatomy is the nictitating membrane and all animals, except humans and pigs, have it.
Dogs are fascinating! In fact there’s a gland behind the nictitans membrane (the nictitans gland) that may protrude and lead to what is called a cherry eye. This condition may be resolved manually but often requires surgery.
