Put a Record On

Music is a pretty powerful medium. It can calm and soothe then flip over and excite and energize! Thus music is an important part of the PAWSH day. There’s always some sort of tune pulsing in the background and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

So we thought we’d share a smattering of songs that frequent our play-list, from the soft and gentle to loud and crazy! (And yes, there may be a subtle ‘pet’ theme with these songs today — we couldn’t help ourselves!) We’re in sort of an oldies mood this morning, hence the love we’re showing for such classics as “Hard Days Night” by the Beatles and “Walk the Line” by good old Johnny Cash. Then we’re also loving the fabulous Florence and the Machine smash hit “The Dog Days Are Over,” as well as the melodic harmonies of the oh-so wonderful Cat Stevens.

Yep, we’re a diverse bunch here at PAWSH. We listen to alternative, jazz, rock, indie, folk, pop and anything in between, which can only mean one thing. More playlists are headed your way in future! Stay tuned! In the mean time, however, tell us what you’re listening to lately? We’re always on the prowl for more tunes!

Oh, and for the true musical hound, be sure to pick up their own record (above) — a Muttown Record to be exact. It’s sure to be a chart-topper!

Lovely Elaborate Plans

We don’t know about you, but this weekend the PAWSH team plans to spend a bit of time sleeping in and delighting in the wonderful art of naps. We’ve been running around like maniacs all week, rounding up the final few elements for our first issue (debuting April 20th 2011) and chasing down those final pesky details to make sure everything is just right when the big day comes.

Of course, there’s still plenty to do this weekend — the last photo-shoot, copy-editing galore, tweaking the website and lots of designing — so our naps will have to be brief. Maybe if we stick our heads under our pillows like the little fellow in this photograph we’ll be able to steal an extra moment of shut-eye before resuming the work that we love unconditionally.

Happy weekend everybody! What are your lovely elaborate plans?

Dogs Go Vintage

We’re just dying over these gorgeous pet portraits created by Jo Chambers of Studio-Legohead. Completely unique in their fine art composition and quirky yet stylish fashions, these vintage-inspired drawings are instant artistic treasures!

Each portrait is made using fine liners and a wide range of graphic markers that are pantone colour coordinated — but to the human eye they look like magnificent water-colour paintings, suitable for adorning any wall space!

Chambers, an art and design connoisseur, says she doesn’t really know where the idea to draw dogs in hats came from, but that once she started she just couldn’t stop!

“Originally it was the character of the canines I was drawing that kept me going,” reveals Chambers, who also illustrates felines, horses and even birds on a regular basis. “I like their characters and the variety of breeds, shapes and sizes. People are so passionate about their beloved animals, it makes what I do a real pleasure. Getting to know owners and their pets adds a very personal and precious element to my work.”

Inspired by anything vintage and beautiful, from a broken ornament to the work of other artists, this British visual storyteller from Bath brilliantly infuses her work with a sense of wit and whimsy. “I never want my work to become too serious,” she confesses, an obvious believer in the light-hearted example set by pets everywhere. “I spent a lot of time aiming to be a ‘artist’ and now I am finally doing something that I love.”

Chambers also accepts commissions for paintings and embroidery (which she calls “drawing with a stitch”) among other creative outlets, but it is the dogs that have truly captured her artistic spirit. That is why it is surprising to learn that Chambers is pet-less!

“I would love to have a pug in my life at a later date,” she reveals. “I love the grumpiness of their faces and especially love when they resemble old women. One day I’ll be able to share my living space with such joy.”

Until that day, Chambers has her gorgeous art as a way to get her much-needed canine fix and we simply cannot get enough of her! Stay tuned ladies and gentlemen, you may soon see Miss Rory decked out in pretty Parisian garb!

Like My Stache? April Fool’s!

Dogs can play practical jokes on April Fool’s too! Especially if you happen to have the Humunga Stache Toy lying around your house. Attached to an otherwise ordinary shiny black ball is a humungus (that’s right!) and completely ridiculous cartoon-esque mustache! Oh and there’s an adorable Mini-Humunga Stache Toy, for the little pups with beard envy!

Of course, when you’re a dog every day is April Fool’s with an opportunity for mischief. What mischief does your pet get in to? Or rather…what mischief does your pup get in to that you know about?
