While we adore eco-friendly pet products we thought we’d bring you something a little different to celebrate Earth Day. Allow us to introduce you to TurfMutt, more commonly known as Lucky by his friends and family. For this pooch, Earth Day is every day and he sets a green example all the time by helping children learn about plant science.

One day while driving down a busy street in Indiana, Kris Kiser came upon a small puppy running down the center lane. At a major intersection the small pup froze in traffic and lay down in the street. Swooping him up while blocking traffic, Kris immediately went to the vet to ensure the shivering ball of fur was not injured, fell in love and adopted him.

From the moment he was brought home and set paw upon grass, it was obvious that Lucky loved green spaces and the great outdoors. This passion led to a partnership with Discovery Education. The TurfMutt Science Program allows Lucky to tell his animal rescue story and teach children in grades 3 to 5 all about the beauty of plant science.

This canine caped crusader encourages kids to explore outside and understand the importance of green spaces. Topics such as natural fertilizer, planting climate appropriate plants, pruning and how to create a garden from scratch are just some of the environmental topics Lucky teaches.

Lucky may not have ‘green thumbs’ but his paws are certainly all over important gardening issues. Perhaps we should all follow his green example by starting in our own backyards. What are you doing for Earth Day this year?
