Dogs + Fonts

Something that is frequently agonized over in the magazine world is typography; the look and feel of fonts and how they relate to the subject matter at hand. True story! That is why we were thrilled to discover this clever graphic print over on Swiss Miss entitled “Dogs as Typefaces.” The concept is to pair each breed of dog with a font that best represents it.  For instance, the poodle is matched with ‘Kunstler,’ a font that is a little bit fancy, most definitely elegant and beautifully poised — attributes that it shares in common with the pooch!

Naturally this inspired us to ponder what typeface would best suit Miss Rory. Being a mini-poodle/shih-tzu mix made pin pointing the perfect font rather challenging. We were hunting for something that reflected her soft and cuddly nature, while also imparting her curiousity, excitable energy, intelligence and expressiveness. After pouring through hundreds of different fonts the decision was finally made. Rory is…..

“Little Days!” This font is cute and cheeky. The loopy curves are friendly and playful, while the cursive constitution embodies a subtle sophistication as well as the never-ending energy that this little monkey lives by day in and day out. In fact we love Rory’s new font so much that we might just put it into our second issue, so keep an eye out!

So now you know. This is a mere sampling of the things we keep in mind when deciding on the fonts for the magazine. Fonts are a very big deal to any project’s design and we love discovering new beauties like we did today. So we’re dying to know —  what font is your pet and why?

Biggest PAWSH Giveaway Ever!

(From Laura) It’s time for PAWSH’s biggest giveaway ever! This one is a little more tricky, but I hope fun as well! You see although this is a blog about pets, it is also a blog about inspiration and making the small moments of life special. Our animal counterparts live in the present and by doing so automatically celebrate every moment of every day. They find happiness in just being near the ones they love and pleasure in the simple things, from paper bags to garden sprinklers.

I find inspiration in many things: art, design, architecture, literature, the look a parent gives their child, the smile a person gives their pet, just staring out of the window or going for a long bike ride. Over the years I have learned how to make myself slow down, take a breath and embrace the moment no matter what is happening. True, being perpetually busy is programmed into my genetic code, but I’ve realized that whenever things seem to start spiraling too quickly all I need to do is take a little break and delve into the things that inspire me and keep me anchored in the present.

Thus I am a huge advocate of the ‘lazy day.’ We all need one day, morning or afternoon a week to simply relax and reflect. A bit of ‘me time’. Some consecutive moments to take note of how lucky we are and connect with the things that inspire us most, whether it’s a person, place or thing.

That’s why our giveaway is this stylish Le Dauphin pet bed, valued at $500, from our wonderful friends at Une Vie de Chateau. It is my hope that seeing your dog or cat curled up in this exquisitely crafted piece of furniture will inspire you to also slow down and take stock of the many simple joys in life…like a good nap.

So to enter for this fabulous giveaway, the PAWSH team and I are asking three questions:

1)  What is your idea of the perfect lazy day?

(My answer: Sitting under a large leafy tree with loved ones and a stack of magazines/books, a notebook and pen, drinking tea and eating chocolate, while watching Rory run around like a maniac.)

2)  Where do you find your creative inspirations from?

(My answer: In so many things. Literature, design, my grandmother, the sound of laughter, long meandering bike rides, music, animals, photography, art…the list really goes on and on…)

3)  Where is the funniest/most unusual place you have found your pet napping?

(My answer: I once came home to find Rory sleeping under the blankets in bed, like a person! When I flicked on the lights to wake her up she looked at me as though to say, “What? This is what you do?”)

Simply answer below by commenting on this post or leave us a message on our Facebook Page.  The three responses that inspire us the most will then be announced and you, our lovely readers, will vote to decide the winner of this magnificent pet bed.

You have until May 30th 2011 to submit your answers! Hope you have fun with it and discover or rediscover your personal inspirations.

Tea Time

Sometimes a pet owner wants something a little different to put their furry friend’s kibble in, but often designer bowls can cost a small fortune. So if you’re on a budget and are looking for a bit of pretty to spruce up the pet dish, a pair of large vintage tea cups might do the trick! Of course this decorative choice probably isn’t suitable for larger breeds, but for the smaller guys an elegant teacup (complete with saucer to catch any spills) is a whimsical way to add flavour to your pet’s daily feedings. What do you think about this idea? Inspired or are we just babbling like the Mad Hatter? Yay teacups!
