The Great Outdoors

Is there any greater bonding experience for a pup and their person than exploring the great outdoors together? The smell of fresh air, the rustle of leaves in the wind and the warmth of the sun shining down on your face. Pure bliss! However, it’s only true escapism from the hustle and bustle of city life if you don’t have to return to the bright lights for supplies. Thus a reliable backpack is the key!

The Approach Pack from Ruffwear offers great functionality and fit. With all sorts of pockets and a waterproof coating your pup can carry their own water, food and Frisbee when out on the open trail! And for yourself, a MEC Aire Hike 28 Backpack — light, sleek and comfortable!

NOTE: Ruffwear advises that dogs carry no more than 25% – 30% of their body weight in their pack. So take care not to overburden them!

Turf Mutt!

While we adore eco-friendly pet products we thought we’d bring you something a little different to celebrate Earth Day. Allow us to introduce you to TurfMutt, more commonly known as Lucky by his friends and family. For this pooch, Earth Day is every day and he sets a green example all the time by helping children learn about plant science.

One day while driving down a busy street in Indiana, Kris Kiser came upon a small puppy running down the center lane. At a major intersection the small pup froze in traffic and lay down in the street. Swooping him up while blocking traffic, Kris immediately went to the vet to ensure the shivering ball of fur was not injured, fell in love and adopted him.

From the moment he was brought home and set paw upon grass, it was obvious that Lucky loved green spaces and the great outdoors. This passion led to a partnership with Discovery Education. The TurfMutt Science Program allows Lucky to tell his animal rescue story and teach children in grades 3 to 5 all about the beauty of plant science.

This canine caped crusader encourages kids to explore outside and understand the importance of green spaces. Topics such as natural fertilizer, planting climate appropriate plants, pruning and how to create a garden from scratch are just some of the environmental topics Lucky teaches.

Lucky may not have ‘green thumbs’ but his paws are certainly all over important gardening issues. Perhaps we should all follow his green example by starting in our own backyards. What are you doing for Earth Day this year?

Ammo: Pet of the Week

“What’s that? What’s that you’re saying? Are you talking to me?” That’s what we think this inquisitive little dachshund, Ammo, is thinking while he has his photograph taken. Whatever is going through his mind there can be no denying that he is one photographic pooch and thus this week’s Thursday Furball!

We still need one more Thursday Furball before voting can commence for the title of April’s Pet of the Month! Remember whoever wins gets a fabulous leash and collar combo from Peachy Keen Pets! Email us your photos to [email protected].
