MODERN PET PORTRAITS

An enormous surprise arrived the other day! Erin Rea of Modern Pet Portraits sent me a beautiful custom illustration of little Miss Rory and I couldn’t be more thrilled with it! Erin’s work is bold, vibrant, graphic and playful — all of my favourite things! Her exquisite artistic interpretations of our animal better halves come to life against their loud patterned backgrounds and are the perfect way to capture your pet’s unique quirky nature. I adore the modern yet retro feel of Rory’s portrait, the polka-dots in particular — it is so our style!

What makes Erin’s work even more unique, however, is that she makes pet portraits into all sorts of fun, fashionable products including cell phone cases (both iPhone and Android!), playing cards and throw pillows. What great gift ideas for modern pet parents!

The artistry and devotion to character that resides in each individual piece is truly astonishing. I would highly recommend popping over to Modern Pet Portraits and taking a look around (especially at the ‘before‘ photos and ‘after‘ art examples). I think you’ll be just as ‘wowed’ as I was! A huge thank you once again to Erin for her incredibly kind gift. I can’t tell you how moved I was by this very special gesture. You have captured Rory’s personality beautifully, right down to her extremely expressive eyebrows! I know this will be an item that I cherish forever.

HOODED HARNESS

Harnesses are fantastic for long walks with your dog. Not only are they comfortable for your pup to wear, but they also help reduce strain on the neck. The Halcyon Harness from Puppia is a wonderful all cotton option that offers strolling pups a darling little hood for those pesky rainy days. This is a great feature for short-haired dogs in particular who might be at risk of chilly ears! Which colour is your favourite?

APPLE OATMEAL DOG TREATS

It was Rory’s birthday over the weekend. She is now three-years-old (I can hardly believe it!) and to celebrate I decided to whip up a batch of special birthday biscuits! This easy homemade recipe is made from wholesome ingredients and the pup goes crazy for them! The juices from the apple sweeten the biscuit and help keep it moist, while the oats offer a tasty chewy texture. Here is the complete hassle-free recipe…

Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 or 2 organic apples
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp natural honey
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat all-purposed flour
  • 1/4 cup water

Directions
1) Chop apple into tiny cubes.
2) Mix oats, flour, egg, apple and water together.
3) Stir in honey.
4) Spoon mixture onto a non-stick cookie sheet in small dollops.
5) Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until cookies are evenly browned and crispy.

It is such fun to treat your pup to a wholesome treat that they love. I personally plan to bake more often for Rory this fall, especially in light of the recent dog treat scare. Rory goes bonkers for apple so these were a real hit! Maybe next year we’ll serve them at a special dog-friendly birthday party. Do you like baking for your dog too?
