Pop pet beds

Who else misses the old 90s Pepsi logo? I for one do and am enthralled by these repurposed pop crates from Charlie Hearts Diesel. Imagine how sweet any of these upcycled pet beds would be sitting in your industrial styled loft or modern mid-century apartment? Plus they have built-in handles which, as any experience pet owner will agree, is an invaluable feature! Which kind of pop crate would you like to see turned into a pet bed?

For the love of dog — adopt

The importance of adoption cannot be stressed enough. Millions of sweet animals are destroyed every single year, a tragedy that can be prevented if we, the humans, looked into our hearts and chose to rescue. (See this pet infographic for some shocking statistics about pet euthanasia.) I was thrilled and incredibly moved to find the “For the Love of Dog Adopt” statement tee from On Our Sleeve. Each t-shirt is 100% organic cotton and sustainably printed, not to mentioned modern, stylish and cool, and expresses beautifully the emotion of what adoption really means! Even if you’re not in the market for a new t-shirt, I hope its sentiment will stay with you. Adoption means saving a life.

About family time

Photos by Liz Bradley

It’s Family Day on Monday, a holiday dedicated to spending time with loved ones, and Rory and I are all over hanging out even more than we already do! We haven’t quite finalized our plans yet. Maybe we’ll visit relatives, maybe we’ll spend the afternoon at the dog park, or maybe we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner with some very special people.

Something Family Day always reminds me of is the importance of taking pictures and capturing those moments, people and events that you will want to remember always. I find most of the time I am the one behind the camera, my finger poised ready to snap at every Kodak moment that happens. As a result, I have very few photographs of myself with people I love. However, one of the perks of having amazing photographer friends, like Liz Bradley who took the photographs above, is that great pictures are only a phone call away. I can’t express how much it means to now have a few photographs of Rory and I together in the same frame and I would highly recommend that everybody book a family portrait session at some point this year. You will not regret it, especially if your photographer is as sweet and fun as Liz! There’s another photograph over here if you’re interested.

I was absolutely thrilled when I picked up a copy of February 2012’s National Geographic, a publication that has had a special place in my heart since I was a little girl eagerly discovering the natural world and its many wonders. My reason for elation? Not only was there was an adorable dog gracing the cover and a fascinating article about canine DNA inside (which I highly recommend reading!) but I was introduced to the poetic work of Robert Clark.

A freelance photographer based in New York City, Clark works for a variety of big name publications and institutions, even capturing some of the historic images that chronicle the 9/11 World Trade Center attack. His innovative eye, however, stands out beautifully within his canine portraiture. He somehow manages to capture real ‘doggy’ moments in a high-fashion light and the results are truly stunning.

Dear Mr. Clark — could you please come visit Ottawa and take Rory’s photograph for me? It would make my year!
